First game of Star Wars Legion

On Thursday Alex bought over his Star Wars Legion game. Over the last few weeks he has been assembling the miniatures and has started to paint them.it is his first attempt at painting miniature figures, and I must say, he has started brightly.

We played the learning game. Most of  the toys were laid out on the table. Alex played the the Stormtroopers led by Darth Vader.

I played the rebels led by Luke Skywalker.

The first turn started off well with all troops moving quickly into firing positions. I made sure I started the second turn and caught a squad of Stormtroopers out in the open. Three were bought down.

My big walker then moved up and managed to bring a hail of fire onto Darth Vader and caused 3 wounds. Alex, at this point, was unable to make a single save.

Luke charged into combat with the speedbikes and chopped one up with his lightsaber. Alex’s only success was to cause wounds to my walker. Things were looking up for the rebels.

After this things started to go wrong. The rebels continued to pour fire onto the Stormtroopers. However. Alex now found the shields on the dice. No matter how many hits I managed to cause Alex was able to save them.

Darth Vader had already moved so I charged Luke into combat with him. Luke scored a further 3 wounds. The next turn saw Darth able to get the first attack in and it was devastating. Luke took 5 wounds. It was my turn to find no shields on the dice. Luke had only to score 2 wounds to finish Darth off so I was still fairly confident. My confidence was misplaced as Luke only managed to score one hit which Alex had no trouble in saving.

In the meantime my walker was also destroyed.

I still had two squads which both poured fire into the speedbike. But despite all the shots only a few got through and Alex was able to save them all.

In the next turn Alex made Darth attack first and unsurprisingly it saw Luke’s demise. The only highlight for the rebels was the sight of the speedbike finally being destroyed.

As the final turn approached one squad of rebels was in charge distance of Vader. Again Alex was able to  activate first. Vader charged the rebels. I then saw truly how effective Darth Vader is in combat. He scored 6 hits. In short the squad died bravely. Alex had the victory with a very enjoyable first game.

Next week some Bolt Action. Nory has agreed to play his first game and has opted for Germans. I have decided to play Americans. We shall see how that goes.

    1. Yes, the game is easy to pick up. The game is played with the units activating alternately. Each unit is allowed to make two actions, but only move twice. All other actions can only happen once per turn. The figures are very nice, although as a novice Alex found putting together some of th vehicles a little tricky. The game could become a little bit similar without the addition of new troops. However for a first impression I thought it was really good. If you like other fantasy flight games you will like this one.

      1. Honestly, I’ve not thought much of other FFG games. They tend to be very rules-dense with multiple exceptions for their exceptions, which a strong element of “pay-to-win” in their LCG range. When they had the Dust licence, Dust Tactics was a strong contender as a miniatures game, but it rapidly died. I guess the crucial thing is: is it Star Wars? Does it capture the feel of the universe and do characters like Luke and Vader play the central role in victory that they ought to without becoming the be-all-and-end-all as they are in Warmachine/Hordes?

  1. I have to admit that I am not that knowledgable about Star Wars. I have seen the films but that is about it. Luke and Vader are both extremely hard hitting. The Stormtroopers put out a lot of fire but generally don’t hit. If they do hit, however, the rebels tend to die. Conversely, the rebels tend to hit more, but the Stormtroopers have better armour and therefore have better saves. The colour coded dice have different amounts of blanks, hits etc. You use D6 dice to save and D8 to hit. I have only played Alex so the games are always played in a friendly manner.
