On Thursday evening Alex and I went to our local, Incom gaming. There we played two Bolt Action games. They were taken from the recently released PDF scenarios that they have put out in support of their D-day campaign. They involved small units with few dice so we were able to complete two games in less than 2 hours. They were both close games and very quick to play. They were great fun too.
Screaming Eagles
Lieutenant Clarkson and his men had landed. Unfortunately his men had all landed badly and spread out. They needed to consolidate. This they all successfully did.
Suddenly an Ostruppen Squad with 1x LMG and 4x Rifles appeared. They turned out to be really good shots and three men from an LMG squad were removed. A German officer and attendant also fired on Clarkson but failed to hit, despite the close proximity. Sergeant Linwood and Corporal Samson both lead their squads towards safely.
Another Ostruppen Squad with 1x LMG and 4x Rifles opened up on the Corporal’s squad but no shots found their target. The squad that had been targeted by the first Ostruppen squad returned fire. The Ostruppen squad disappeared in a hail of bullets and those left standing ran away. Suddenly the German officer and attendant looked rather exposed. They were hit by Clarkson and fled.
Linwood and Samson both moved towards safety once more, being chased by Germans.
Suddenly a German squad of veterans appeared on the left flank. One Para squad was immediately destroyed. Things were not looking good for Clarkson and his men. Clarkson ran forward. One more move and he would escape. The same was true for Linwood and Samson.
The final turn saw the Germans with an advantage. (The Germans had four dice to three.) Any further casualties would mean that Clarkson would have failed in his mission. Clarkson was the first to make a break for it. He had escaped. The Germans now had a definite advantage. However, Linwood now made his break and escaped. Only Samson remained on the table. Four German units were bearing down on them. However, before the Germans could activate Samson escaped. The game was a draw.
Foxes and Rabbits
Lieutenant Rick Clarkson advanced into the town. He knew that the Germans had deployed snipers. The paras advanced cautiously up the road. The first shot rang out. It appeared to come from the buildings on the left. The mortar fired at the nearest buildings but the shot failed to hit. Another shot rang out. Again the shot was well wide. “No where near,” smirked sergeant Linwood. The snipers sights obviously needed adjusting.
Suddenly an SS unit opened up from behind a hedge. There was no problem with their sights as the nearest squad was hit causing three casualties.
One squad started to move behind some buildings on the right to avoid the sniper. Another squad headed off in the direction of where the snipers appeared to be hidden. Another shot was heard. Lieutenant Clarkson’s man was hit. He was obviously dead and Clarkson headed for cover on the buildings. The mortar switched fire onto the SS. Again, the shot was wide. Meanwhile, the SS opened up on the squad that had advanced up the road. The paras were not to make it. The other sniper’s shot was again well wide. Meanwhile, in the shelter of the buildings the squad with Sergeant Linwood ran forward.
The mortar again fired at the SS but again missed. The SS moved to try and intercept Linwood’s squad. Linwood gain ran his men forward. Clarkson followed behind. Suddenly a German officer appeared form behind the wood. Two assault rifles fired. Clarkson fell. He was not to see the final Allied victory. The snipers opened up again on the mortar. Both missed. The sights definitely needed adjusting. The paras that had advanced on the snipers fired at the building. They appeared to have done no damage.
Linwood ran his squad forward. He needed to escape from this zone. Suddenly, heavily armed SS troops, moved through the wood and appeared behind them. Shots rang out. The fire was devastating. Linwood looked around anxiously and was amazed to see that all his men were still standing. Perhaps it was that, but he and his men were so shocked that they stopped running. (After taking a pin, they failed their order test and went down.) The mortar again fired but failed to hit. The snipers were not so unlucky and the mortar was destroyed. The squad nearest the snipers again failed to hit.
Linwood once more took control of his troops and they escaped intact from under the noses of the SS. The other squad was again targeted by the two snipers who once again failed to hit. With Clarkson, the mortar and another squad destroyed and only Linwood escaping the Germans had scored a victory.
The scenarios are really fun and I would thoroughly recommend them.
